UT Dallas AAPG Chapter Intro 2018

Brief UT Dallas AAPG Chapter Intro 2018 - AAPG YouTube Video Contest -

Behold Our UTD AAPG Chapter!

Energy, the lifeblood of human civilization, it powers our phones, our computers, our cars, and our homes. BUT, have you ever wondered, where does it come from? Will it ever run out? We are the people, the scientists, who seek to answer this questions. And, if so, how do we get more? Hello, my name is Jonathan Stine and I am proud to introduce all of you to the University of Texas at Dallas student chapter of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Our chapter is small but we have accomplished much, one of our proudest achievements is our success in the Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) competition. In 2016, our team, which consisted of only three members won second place in the Southwestern section of the IBA competition, the first time our chapter ever placed in the regionals. Building on the momentum, the 2017 team became the first members of our chapter to win first place and a medal, and honored representing the entire region at the global finals. However, our chapter does a lot more than competitions our main mission is to provide as many opportunities as we can to assist in the careers of our members, we have honored that mission with great success. In order to do this our chapter has taken the initiative to contact local oil companies such as: kosmos, pioneer, and geofrontiers (to name a few) in order to organize lectures, field trips, and short courses for the benefit of our members. This chapter has also been successful in getting involved in various volunteer events as a means to give back to other community. These include cleaning up local parks with Groundwork Dallas and preparing sandwiches for the homeless with Soupmobile, both of these events we do at least once a month.Furthermore, we also volunteer at the local Brentfield Elementary school, where we judge science fairs and participate in STEM night, an event where we use fossils, minerals, rock specimens, and visual aids such as this wooden fault model; to teach young children basic geology. As you can see we do a lot at our chapter and best of all we are always open to new members. So if you want to further your career, make some new friends, or enjoy some free pizza then feel free to come on down to the Research and Operations Center (ROC) at UT Dallas. We meet there at noon on the 2nd Friday of every month. Looking forward to seeing you there!!!!
