Geosciences Department - the University of Texas at Dallas
Greetings from the University of Texas at Dallas and the Department of Geosciences. I’m John Geissman and I’m Professor and Head of the Geosciences Department. We’ve put this short video together to encourage you to consider joining our department, either as an undergraduate major or as a graduate student in our Masters or PhD programs. We are a small department with a big impact. We were one of the three original research programs that provided a firm scientific foundation for what is now the rapidly growing University of Texas at Dallas. UTD is located on the north side of the bustling Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in north Texas, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States. We have about 60 undergraduate majors and a similar number of graduate students. Our undergraduate Geoscience major provides a broad foundation for students and ensures that they will be able to compete for good jobs or apply to top graduate schools. Our graduate degree programs help students develop their professional skills and expertise, especially in our areas of faculty strength in geophysics, tectonics, and environmental geology. We are a student-focused department, with very active student-run organizations, including Geoclub, AAPG, SEG, and AIPG chapters. We encourage students to pursue their passions, and we help them develop the skills they need to succeed. Our alumni are leaders in government, academia, and industry. Some of our alumni have started their own oil companies, and one of our alumni is now Director of the United States Geologic Survey. We hope you will visit our website – just google “UTD Geosciences” – where you can learn more about UTD Geosciences and consider joining us. We look forward to meeting you soon!
